CHALK opened on 10 October with a series of exciting exhibitions and events across the city.
In a reversal of the custom for private views, CHALK launch events welcomed the public across three venues offering an opportunity to meet artists and curators and be part of special events encompassing contemporary art, poetry, creative writing, performance and film.

Melanie Rose’s practice is rooted in drawing which informs all of the projects she is involved in. Using time-honoured methods alongside digital media her current focus is the ancient trails that intersect the village in which she lives including the flora & fauna and geology therein.
Join Melanie Rose for a chalk walk! Four walks each designed to incorporate a section of an ancient trail that intersects the village of Cheriton each walk will last up to 2 hours. The four walks incorporate part of an ancient trail that intersects the village of Cheriton which is nestled in the river valley north of Winchester on the South Downs and include: the Wayfarers Way; Itchen Way; Civil War (Battle of Cheriton) and the South Downs Way.
After each walk, participants are welcome to visit Melanie’s studio where there is a display of exploratorwork based on the four chalk walks. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Award-winning international artist Helena Eflerová and painter/poet Hugh Greasley build on previous collaborations to create a new performance with dance and poetry, called Lunar Walk inspired by an overnight walk at full moon along the River Itchen exploring the synergies between life before birth and life of a chalk stream.
