CHALK is an exhibition and engagement space with exciting happenings, interactive works and events. Visual, sound and performance artists, writers and poets explore the theme of chalk connecting our city with its past and with the chalk stream and downland landscape

Subtle interventions and playful ideas of a rich variety of artists and makers. Inspired by the museum’s extensive collections including artefacts both made from chalk and found within our chalk landscape. The exhibition continues in Winchester Cathedral

Artworks, writing poetry and performance bring to light hidden histories, deep foundations and reflections on life, death, miracles and the Trinity. The chalk theme provides inspiration and material for well-established and emerging artists working in paint, print, performance and film. Normal entry fees apply. The exhibition continues in the City Museum

Kim Norton uses materials from the locality in their raw state to re-imagine something that can often be regarded as unimportant. Presented onto unstretched canvas, CaCO3 dismisses formal ideas around painting. The canvas is simply a surface to work with chalk used as a mark-making tool, conveying a strong sense of place. The history and formation of chalk from microscopic skeletons of plankton some 100 million years ago is the starting point of Stephen Cooper’s inventive and colourful large-scale installation at the Link Gallery

Artists Ian Dawson and Louisa Minkin explore the materiality of chalk through the discipline of archaeology, creating 3-D printed models
